Abdominal Ultrasound
The abdomen is the area between the chest (thorax) and pelvis. It contains the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas, gall bladder, spleen, kidneys, bile ducts, and others. The purpose of an abdominal ultrasound is to produce images of the body parts that lie in the abdomen. Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce these images. It is noninvasive, pain-free and a safe procedure.
Uses of Abdominal Ultrasound
Abdominal ultrasound is usually done to diagnose any diseases or disorders in the organs of the abdomen. It is usually carried out if any of the listed conditions are suspected.

Pelvic Ultrasound
The pelvis is a basin-shaped structure of bones that connects the trunk and the legs in a human body. It contains the intestines, the urinary bladder, and the internal sex organs. Similar to the abdomen ultrasound, pelvic ultrasound is a pain-free, noninvasive medical test.

How to prepare for an Abdomen & Pelvis Ultrasound?
The preparation varies depending upon the organ of the abdomen that is under investigation.
- If the ultrasound is related to the liver, gallbladder, spleen, and pancreas, the doctor may advise you to eat a fat-free meal on the evening before the test. After this meal, you need to fast until the ultrasound is finished.
- If the ultrasound is done to investigate the kidneys, the doctor may ask you to drink five to six glasses of water about an hour ago before the test. This is done to fill up the bladder. The doctor may advise you to not eat food eight to twelve hours before the test.
- If the ultrasound is done for aorta, the doctor may ask you to avoid eating for eight to twelve hours before the test.
- For pelvic ultrasound, no fasting is required unless stated otherwise by the doctor.
- For a transvaginal ultrasound, the bladder must be empty before the test.
What happens during the procedure?
For an abdominal ultrasound, the radiologist will apply a gel around the area that needs to be studied. An ultrasound device named transducer is pressed against the stomach which helps to produce an image on the computer screen. The total time required to complete is about 30 minutes.
For a transvaginal ultrasound, the radiologist will insert the transducer inside the vagina. The bladder of the patient needs to be empty for this procedure. A gel is applied to the transducer. Only about two to three inches of the transducer is inserted inside.
For transrectal ultrasound, a gel is applied on the transducer and it is then placed inside the rectum.
Results
After the test is completed, the radiologist or the doctor will have a look at the images and discuss the results with you. Any additional test or screening may be required depending upon the result.
