A Doppler ultrasound is an imaging technique that is used to analyze or estimate the blood flow through blood vessels. This method uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to estimate blood flow.
This is a noninvasive test, which means that there is no need for an incision into the body. Doppler ultrasound differs from other ultrasound methods in that it can analyze moving blood cells while others can only create images of structures inside the body. Among many blood disorders, this method helps to diagnose and treat conditions such as blood clots and poor circulation. A Doppler ultrasound is an important part of the blood flow study. Due to its noninvasive nature, Doppler ultrasound is done as an alternative to angiography, in which a blood dye is injected into the blood vessels.
How does it work?
Doppler ultrasound uses a wand-like device that is known as a transducer. The purpose of the transducer is to create and send high-frequency sound waves to the blood vessels of the body that is under the study. In doing so, the pitch of the sound wave is changed due to the movement of the blood cells. This change in a sound wave is then recorded in the computer, which is, in turn, turned into images or graphs.
Different disorders can be diagnosed with Doppler ultrasound
Doppler ultrasound helps to find out if there is any condition that is preventing blood flow in the blood vessels.
The test is used for many purposes, some of which are listed below.
- Checking heart functions. It is often done along with electrocardiograms.
- Looking for blood flow blockages. This test helps to diagnose a condition called deep vein thrombosis (DVT), in which a blood clot forms in the vein, usually in the leg.
- Checking if there is any blood vessel damage.
- Checking for superficial thrombophlebitis, a condition in which a blood clot forms inside the skin.
- Vascular tumors in dome parts of the body.
- Bulging arteries.
- Defect of a heart valve.
- Checking for hardening of the arteries that provide blood to legs. This condition is called arteriosclerosis
- Checking for narrowing of blood vessels in the arms and legs, which occurs in a disorder called peripheral arterial disease (PAD).
- Checking for narrowing of the blood in the neck, which is common in a condition known as carotid artery stenosis.

- For smokers, cigarettes and other nicotine related products should not be used several hours prior to the test.
- Depending upon the type of test, sometimes fasting might be required.
- The risks associated with this test are minimal, as no harmful radiation is used. It is also considered safe for women who are pregnant.
What to expect during a Doppler ultrasound?
The method might vary slightly depending upon the type of test. But overall, the following things could be expected during the test.
- Removing the clothing, jewelry from the area that is going to be analyzed is a must.
- Lying on the bed while the procedure is being carried out.
- A water-soluble gel will be applied to the area that is under the investigation.
- The transducer is moved along the area of investigation to capture the result.
- The movement may produce a rushing or a hissing sound.
- The test may last between 30 – 60 minutes.
- Mostly, there are no strict regulations after a Doppler ultrasound. Usual activities could be done following the test unless otherwise advised by the doctor.
Results and its interpretation
The interpretation of the result varies depending on the area of the body that is being studied.
Normal results mean that there is no narrowing, hardening, and blockage in the veins or arteries.
Abnormal results may include disorders such as:
- A blood clot in an artery or vein.
- Narrowing of the blood vessels.
- Problems in blood circulation.
- Closing of vein
The above-provided points are not exhaustive, a patient needs to consult their doctor before coming to a well-informed conclusion.
