Venous Doppler Study at Clinic One

A standard scan often looks only at the surface. At Clinic One, we provide a Bilateral Functional Study to ensure a complete cardiovascular profile.

  • Valvular Assessment: We don’t just look for clots; we check the “valves” in your veins to see if they are actually working.
  • Deep vs. Superficial: We map both systems to ensure your surgeon has a 100% accurate roadmap for laser or surgical treatment.
  • Acoustic Signal Mapping: Our high-fidelity equipment lets us “hear” the blood flow, identifying silent reflux that visual-only machines miss.

Is a Vein Doppler Right for You?

Most of our patients in Kathmandu choose venous doppler ultrasound because they are experiencing:

  • Persistent Swelling: Especially around the ankles at the end of the day.
  • Visible Varicose Veins: Needing a professional map before starting treatment.
  • Post-Flight Cramping: Ruling out Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) after travel.
  • Skin Discolouration: Identifying if “darkening” skin around the legs is a circulation issue.

How to Prepare for Your Venous Doppler at Clinic One

  • Preparation: No fasting is required. You may eat and drink normally. (In case of abdominal and organ scans, avoid gas-producing foods like beans, dairy, or carbonated sodas the day before your scan.)
  • Lotions & Oils: Do not apply lotions, powders, or oils to the area being scanned, as these can interfere with the acoustic gel.
  • Avoid Stimulants: Please avoid smoking and caffeine (coffee/tea) for at least 2 hours before your scan, as they can constrict your blood vessels and affect the accuracy of the flow velocity measurements.
  • Timing: Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete your registration and relax. Taking a few minutes to rest before the scan helps stabilise your blood flow for more accurate readings.
  • Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing. For leg scans, loose shorts are ideal. For arm scans, a short-sleeved or sleeveless shirt is best.
  • Medications: Continue all your regular medications unless your doctor specifically tells you otherwise.
  • Hydration: Staying well-hydrated helps “plump up” the veins, making them easier to map.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Doppler done for veins or arteries?

Doppler technology evaluates both systems, but for different clinical reasons. An Arterial Doppler measures oxygen-rich blood flowing away from the heart to identify blockages or narrowing (stenosis). A Venous Doppler tracks blood flowing back to the heart to detect clots (DVT) or valve failure (insufficiency).

Is a Venous Doppler scan painful?

This is a non-invasive, painless procedure. While our senior radiologist may apply moderate pressure with the ultrasound probe to check for clots (DVT), this typically causes only minor discomfort and no lasting pain.

How long does a full venous study take?

A comprehensive mapping of the venous system usually requires 30 to 45 minutes. This ensures our specialists have enough time to evaluate both the deep and superficial veins with clinical precision.

Can this scan detect hidden blood clots (DVT)?

Yes. High-resolution Doppler imaging is the primary tool for identifying Deep Vein Thrombosis. Our high-fidelity equipment can detect blockages or clots that might be missed by standard ultrasound machines.

Will I get the results on the same day?

All diagnostic reports at Clinic One are processed immediately. You can expect your verified report, signed by a Senior Consultant Radiologist, within hours of your scan through your preferred digital channel.

Can I return to my normal activities after the scan?

There is zero downtime following a Venous Doppler. You can drive, walk, and return to work immediately after the appointment.
