Why is X-Ray done?

X-Ray is one of the easy and fastest ways for a physician to view the organs and the structure of the human body. It also monitors the nature of the disease and checks how well the treatment that you are getting is working. The conditions when X-Ray are supposed to be done are:

Risks of X-Ray

X-Ray produces a small amount of radiation which creates an image of your body. This radiation exposure might not be safe for most adults and very risky for a growing baby. It can also cause mutation in our DNA, thus, there are chances of cancer later in life.

In some people, the injection of contrast medium can cause side effects such as:

• Hives
• Itching
• Nausea
• Metallic taste
• Lightheadedness

How do you prepare for an X-Ray?

While taking an X-ray there is no need for special preparation, these investigations are short and painless. Depending on where you are examining you should wear comforting clothes in which you can move around easily. The doctors or technicians may ask you to remove any metallic items or jewelry from your body. If you have any operations done you should tell your doctors as some implants might block the image that is being created by the X-Ray machine.

Before performing some X-rays you are given a contrast medium such as barium and iodine which helps to highlight a special area of your body in the X-Ray image. The contrast medium must either be swallowed or you can receive it as an injection or an enema.

X-Ray Result (Report)

After the X-Ray is taken, it is saved on the computer digitally. A radiologist interprets the result and sends it to the doctors who explain the result to the patient. X-Ray reports normally can take up to 2-3 hours depending upon the number of people in the clinic but in case of an emergency, the result can be available to your doctors in minutes.

History of X-Ray

X-Ray was invented in 1895 by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen (1845-1923) who was a professor at Wurzburg University in Germany. He was working in his laboratory with a Cathode-ray tube. The tube consisted of a bulb with positive and negative electrodes encapsulated in it. He found out that a new type of light was emitted from the tube when the air in the tube was evacuated, and when a high voltage was applied.
