Indications
Meningococcal (Groups A, C, Y, and W-135) Meningococcal Polysaccharide Diphtheria Toxoid Conjugate Vaccine is indicated for active immunization to prevent invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitides serogroups A, C, Y and W -135.
It is approved for use in individuals 9 months through 55. This vaccine doesn’t prevent meningitis caused by other microorganisms or disease caused by N meningitides serogroup B.
After getting the Meningococcal vaccination from doctors, your body builds up protective antibody levels, which can be achieved within 7 to 10 days.
Dose of Meningococcal Vaccination and Route of Administration
Depending on the recipient’s age and muscle mass, the meningococcal or meningitis vaccine should be administered as a 0.5-ml intramuscular injection, preferably in the anterolateral thigh or deltoid region.
Dose for Children Below 2 Years:
Menactra is given in a two-dose series at least three months apart to children 9 through 23 months of age.
Dose for People Above 2 Years:
Individuals 2 to 55 years of age receive a single dose.
Note: Healthcare providers can give a booster dose to people aged 15 to 55 if at least 4 to 6 years have passed since their last dose and they are still at risk for meningococcal disease.
Routine Vaccination Is Recommended for the Following High-Risk Groups

- Deficiencies in late Complement components (C3. C5-C9) immunity
- Absence of normal spleen function
- Persons with laboratory or industrial exposure to N meningitides aerosols.

Warnings and Precautions

- Altered immunocompetence
- Pregnancy: Vaccinate if only needed after doctor consultation (category- c)
- Nursing Mother: It is unknown if this drug passes into human milk. Since many drugs do, doctors should use caution when giving this vaccine to a nursing mother.
- Pediatric and geriatric use: The protection and effectiveness of the Menactra vaccine have not been confirmed for infants under 9 months or adults over 55 years.
Adverse Reactions
- Mild pain and redness at the site of infection for 1 to 2 days
- Tenderness
- Pain transient fever might develop in less than or equal to 2% of young children.
