Why must the groups at risk take the Pneumonia vaccine?
Pneumonia infects the lungs. It intensifies the air sacks, which may fill with fluid, causing coughing, phlegm, fever, and difficulty breathing. Pneumonia is caused mainly by bacteria and viruses that enter your body. It can be life-threatening – especially to the elderly and those who have a weak immune system. Hence, the Pneumonia vaccine must be taken for prevention.
Why must elders get Pneumonia vaccine in the winter?
The immune system is a defense system that the human body uses to fight against infections and toxins. A weakened immune system means a higher risk of contracting infections like Pneumonia.
As we grow older, our immune system gets weak. Many researchers believe that exposure to cold weather during the winter adversely affects our immune response. Therefore, we highly recommend older adults above 65 years of age get a Pneumonia Vaccine to protect themselves from Pneumonia.
What are the symptoms of Pneumonia?
Pneumonia symptoms vary from one person to another, but some of the major symptoms are:
- Cough
- Fever with chills
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
What are the causes of Pneumonia in the elderly?
Pneumonia can be classified into bacterial, fungal, and viral pneumonia – based on their infectious agents. Key causes are:
- Weak immunity of the elderly.
- Exposure to cold weather during the winter lowers the immune response, making older people more susceptible to pneumonia.
How can you prevent Pneumonia in the elderly?
- Wash hands frequently as it may contain germs from daily activities.
- Wear Masks.
- Stay in a well-ventilated room, house, or workplace.
- Practice good oral hygiene.
- Live a healthy lifestyle (eating hygienic foods, staying hydrated, and exercising daily).
- Vaccination. A single shot of Pneumonia vaccine called PCV-13 can prevent Pneumonia in high-risk groups such as:
- Older adults above 65 years of age
- Adults under 65 years of age with a weakened immune system due to long-term steroid therapy, HIV, organ transplant, and cancer patients
- Adults with chronic medical conditions like heart disease, asthma, diabetes, etc.
